About the role
H2O.ai is seeking a Manager of Software Development to lead and scale engineering efforts, focusing on building scalable, data-intensive applications. The role involves defining technical roadmaps, mentoring engineers, and ensuring the delivery of robust AI solutions. Responsibilities include hiring and developing a high-performing team, contributing to the design and deployment of applications using technologies such as Kubernetes, Go, Python, Protobuf, gRPC, and REST API, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in software development and engineering leadership, with a passion for data-heavy applications and distributed systems. The position is based in Sri Lanka and offers the opportunity to work in a flexible, remote-friendly environment as part of a world-class team.
Must have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 10+ years of software development experience, with 2–3 years in an engineering leadership or management role.
- Proven experience leading small-to-medium teams across multiple streams, including hiring, mentoring, and retaining strong engineers.
- Proficiency in Java, Go, Python, Kubernetes, Protobuf, gRPC, REST API, and micro-services architecture.
- Passion for data-heavy applications and handling large datasets.
- Familiarity with microservices architecture and distributed systems.
- Ability to balance strategic roadmap thinking with day-to-day execution and team health.
- A growth mindset – we don't expect you to know everything, but we expect you to be excited to learn.
Nice to have
- Bonus points if you've worked with Kafka or Helm (but if not, we'll help you learn!).
- Knowledge of JVM-based languages is advantageous but optional.
