Technical Lead – Backend Engineering
About the role
Mitra Innovation is seeking a hands-on Technical Lead for Backend Engineering to lead the design and delivery of a core platform that manages complex claims and financial workflows. The role involves working closely with technical leadership, product owners, and business stakeholders to translate intricate business rules into robust, scalable software within a multi-tenant SaaS environment. Key responsibilities include leading backend development, ensuring secure and reliable API and event-driven integration design, and maintaining high standards in automated testing, code review, and production observability. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in TypeScript, Node.js, AWS serverless architecture, and relational databases, as well as strong communication and technical leadership skills. Must have
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in TypeScript, Node.js, and backend engineering.
- 5+ years of production experience with AWS serverless architecture and Serverless Framework or equivalent tooling, including Lambda, API Gateway, and messaging/workflow services.
- Practical domain-driven design: define shared terminology, domain boundaries, aggregates and business rules; translate them into data models, APIs and implementation.
- Strong relational database and SQL skills, including MySQL, transactions, concurrency and safe schema evolution.
- Ability to design secure APIs and event-driven integrations, preserving tenant isolation and handling retries, duplicate requests and partial failures.
- Sound architectural judgement: explain trade-offs, favour reuse and incremental refactoring, avoid unnecessary complexity and preserve existing behaviour.
- Strong automated testing, code review, Git, CI/CD, debugging and production observability practices.
- Ability to reason precisely about financial calculations, limits, committed funds, payments, dated rates, corrections and auditable history.
- Proven ownership of complex backend work from discovery and design through coding and delivery.
- Excellent English communication; confidently discuss requirements and technical decisions with product owners, business stakeholders and senior technical leaders.
- Ability to dissect unfamiliar domains, uncover exceptions, challenge assumptions constructively and turn ambiguity into actionable decisions.
- Ability to connect business scenarios and worked examples to implementation and meaningful acceptance tests.
- Technical leadership: independently own defined workstreams, mentor engineers, review designs, plan delivery and raise risks early.
- Comfortable joining an established team and leading through hands-on design, coding, testing and debugging.
Nice to have
- Experience with insurance, claims management, financial services or other complex business-rule systems.
- Financial platform experience involving ledgers, budgets, pricing, contributions, payments or reconciliation.
- Prior multi-tenant SaaS experience and enterprise or third-party integrations.
- Behaviour-driven development, event storming or similar collaborative modelling techniques.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools and critical validation of their output.
