Senior Java Software Engineer
About the role
The Senior Java Software Engineer role at LAUGFS Eco Sri Limited involves designing, developing, enhancing, and supporting enterprise-grade Java services and applications with a focus on reliability, scalability, maintainability, and security. The position requires hands-on experience with Java backend development, microservices, REST APIs, messaging, concurrency, and distributed services. Responsibilities include building robust integrations, optimizing SQL databases, establishing engineering standards, and providing technical leadership through design reviews and mentoring. Candidates must have at least 4 years of professional software development experience and a relevant degree. The company is a BOI venture facilitating air quality management in Sri Lanka through the Vehicle Emission Testing program.
Must have
- 4+ years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on Java backend development and practical experience with integrations, concurrency, messaging, or distributed services.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 11 or later, including OOP, collections, generics, streams/lambdas, exception handling, JVM, garbage collection, memory management, and performance tuning.
- Advanced practical knowledge of Java multithreading and concurrency: executors, thread pools, CompletableFuture, synchronisation, locks, concurrent data structures, memory visibility, race conditions, deadlocks, and safe shared-state design.
- Practical experience designing or operating microservices, including service boundaries, API contracts, configuration, resilience, observability, and independent deployment considerations.
- Hands-on experience with message queues or event brokers such as Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, or Kafka, including asynchronous consumers, retries, dead-letter queues, idempotency, and failure handling.
- Strong integration experience with REST APIs, HTTPS, OAuth2/JWT or equivalent authentication concepts, API versioning, and secure service-to-service communication.
- Strong SQL and relational database skills including query tuning, indexing, transactions, and connection management.
- Proficient with Git workflows, pull requests, code reviews, branching, and conflict resolution.
- Experience with Azure application hosting, secrets/configuration management, monitoring, diagnostics, and CI/CD fundamentals.
- Experience with automated unit, integration, and contract testing using JUnit, Mockito, and suitable test tooling.
Nice to have
- Container or AKS experience is beneficial.
