Python Engineer
About the role
The company is seeking a Junior Python Engineer to join an early-stage engineering team in Colombo, Sri Lanka, focused on building AI-powered automation systems for US healthcare billing. The role involves developing AI agents, backend services, system integrations, and supporting infrastructure primarily using Python. Responsibilities include agent logic development, backend and integration work, document processing, testing, implementing human-in-the-loop workflows, ensuring production reliability, and continuous improvement of the platform. Candidates should have 1–3 years of Python experience, demonstrable technical ability, backend fundamentals, LLM integration experience, an entrepreneurial mindset, strong written communication, and learning agility. Preferred qualifications include experience with browser automation, AI agent frameworks, cloud platforms, and healthcare standards. The position offers career progression towards a Founding Engineer role with potential equity, direct collaboration with experienced leadership, and exposure to the full software development lifecycle.
Must have
- Approximately 1–3 years of professional Python development experience, with practical knowledge of testing, type hints, and asynchronous programming.
- Evidence of building practical software, such as personal projects, open-source contributions, tools, or other working applications.
- Experience developing REST APIs using FastAPI or Flask, working with PostgreSQL or similar SQL databases, and using Git and Linux.
- Hands-on experience integrating a large language model (LLM) API into a software application or project.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving, comfort working in an evolving environment, and a willingness to take ownership beyond assigned tasks.
- Clear written English, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members in a US business context.
- Curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and business domains quickly.
Nice to have
- Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:Browser automation tools such as Playwright or Selenium.
- AI agent frameworks such as LangGraph.
- OpenAI or Anthropic SDKs.
- PDF parsing, document extraction, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
- Docker and GitHub Actions.
- Cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Healthcare interoperability standards, including FHIR, HL7, and X12.
- Frontend development using React.
