Senior Operations Engineer (Data Platforms)
About the role
The Senior Technical Operations Engineer – Data Platforms at Sysco LABS will be responsible for maintaining the health, availability, and performance of enterprise data platforms, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure. The role involves proactive monitoring, operational support, incident management, root cause analysis, automation development, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. The engineer will also participate in a 24x7 support rotation to ensure continuous availability of critical data services. Candidates should have a strong background in data platform operations, cloud technologies (AWS and GCP), scripting, and ITSM practices. Must have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
- 3+ years of experience in Data Platform Operations, Production Support, Platform Operations, or a similar role supporting enterprise data platforms.
- Proven experience providing Level 2 production support, incident management, root cause analysis, problem management, data validation, and service restoration within established SLA commitments.
- Practical experience applying ITIL principles and ITSM practices across incident, service request, problem, change, and knowledge management processes.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, Python, and Shell scripting, with hands-on experience supporting ETL/ELT pipelines, Apache Airflow/Cloud Composer workflows, and Apache Kafka-based streaming platforms.
- Experience working with cloud-native data platforms and services on AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Glue, Redshift, Athena, EMR, DynamoDB) and Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud Composer, Cloud Storage, Datastream).
- Hands-on experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions using Datadog or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of DevOps and DataOps practices including Linux, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred), containerization, Git, and automation frameworks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead technical investigations and troubleshoot complex production environments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, and business teams, mentor junior engineers, and drive operational improvements.
