Research Assistant

About the role

The Research Assistant will contribute to a project focused on improving the quality and readability of Sri Lankan stone inscriptions for epigraphy. Key responsibilities include conducting on-site data collection and image acquisition at historical locations, designing and evaluating deep learning and machine learning models for character recognition, integrating algorithms into deployable software tools, and conducting field testing and validation with domain experts. The role requires a strong background in signal processing, pattern analysis, and practical experience with machine/deep learning frameworks, as well as demonstrated interest and track record in computer vision research, image analysis, and academic publication writing. Applicants must hold a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science with a First or Second Class Upper. The position is based at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, and lasts for 7 months.
