Remote Operations Engineer – Backup & Patch Management
About the role
The Remote Operations Engineer – Backup & Patch Management role is a full-time, remote position based in Sri Lanka, supporting an Australian Managed Service Provider (MSP). The role focuses on backup monitoring, verification, patch remediation, and recurring infrastructure maintenance across multiple client environments. Key responsibilities include performing scheduled backup checks, monitoring backup job histories, conducting file-level test restores, reviewing backup configurations, processing patch remediation tickets, troubleshooting Windows Server and workstation update failures, and maintaining accurate technical documentation. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Veeam Backup & Replication, Microsoft Azure Backup, Datto RMM, and solid Windows Server administration skills. Must have
- Practical, hands-on experience with Veeam Backup & Replication, including backup monitoring, file-level restoration and repository and storage capacity checks
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure Backup and Recovery Services vaults, and with local and offsite backup environments
- Practical experience with Datto RMM, including Windows patch management and remediation, and Datto BCDR and SaaS Protection
- Solid Windows Server administration and troubleshooting skills, plus Windows workstation support and Windows Update troubleshooting
- Basic networking and infrastructure knowledge
- Strong written English communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate tickets and documentation
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow technical checklists and documented processes
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision during Australian (Melbourne) business hours, from a secure remote workspace with reliable internet
Nice to have
- PowerShell scripting knowledge
- Experience investigating backup failures involving Veeam repositories, storage, locks or Azure backup agents
- Experience supporting multiple client environments within an MSP
- Experience with IT ticketing and documentation platforms
- Familiarity with IT security and access control practices
